I&U Group — is an agricultural holding that has been implementing agricultural projects in Ukraine for over 20 years. The company is engaged in the cultivation of grain, oilseeds and sugar beets in the Kirovograd region. I&U Groupis focused on the export of grain and is one of the five most efficient crop-growing agricultural companies in Ukraine. The group includes the Kapitanovskoye Sugar Plant enterprise and a number of elevators: Kapitanovskoye ZHP, Kutsovskoye ZHP, Novomirgorod-Agrokontrakt. The agricultural holding exports more than 40% of the sugar produced at its enterprise.
Task
The construction of a complex for the processing of organic waste allows the I&U Group holding to turn sugar production waste into raw materials for the production of electricity and heat, as well as significantly improve the environmental situation in the village Kapitanovka. The launch of the biogas complex will reduce CO2 emissions by 24,000 thousand tons per year.
Outcome
In 2020, I&U Group Agroholding completed the construction of a biogas complex with a capacity of 6 MW/h. The construction of the complex, which is located near the village of Kapitanovka, Novomirgorodsky district, Kirovograd region, has been ongoing since December 2018, the total cost of the project was €23 million. The EBRD provided a loan of €13 million, the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) provided a loan of € 2 million. The complex will process waste from sugar production and silage into raw materials for heat and electricity. The complex will annually produce 48,180 MW of “green” electricity.
For the production of electrical energy, the customer chose INNIO JENBACHER equipment. To implement the project, KTS Engineering supplied 4 Jenbacher JMC 420 gas engines with a capacity of 1.5 MW each. Specialists of KTS Engineering offered a container-type solution*, using a special version of Jenbacher engines designed for the specifics of biogas.
In the technological process of obtaining biogas without access to oxygen, biogas will be produced (with a methane content of 52-65%), process water saturated with nitrogen with a 5% solids residue and dehystat (dry residue) saturated with potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus. The processing of sugar production waste into energy takes place in hydraulic reactors using the technology of anaerobic fermenters with hydraulic mixing. The remains from the production of biogas will be processed into biofertilizers: the complex will annually produce 10-12 million tons of solid mineral fertilizers and 80.3 thousand tons of liquid fertilizers.
Solution features
- Technology and efficiency. Simplicity and reliability of design, low cost of operation and maintenance, as well as high processing efficiency, in comparison with other methods, allows you to get more biogas from a ton of substrate.
- Special version of Jenbacher enginesr. To achieve high reliability and efficiency, Jenbacher engines have been manufactured taking into account the characteristics of the type of fuel used.
- Extended warranty for Jenbacher equipment. The main criteria when choosing JENBACHER equipment for the customer were generally recognized reliability, high technical and economic indicators and the availability of qualified service in Ukraine, represented by KTS Engineering. For this project, the company provided a 3-year warranty for JENBACHER equipment.
