Alternative energy as a strategy for the development of an agricultural holding

Gals Agro LLC. Increasing the capacity of own production at possible facilities.

The Gals Agro agricultural holding includes 2 sugar factories, 7 agro-industrial firms, 4 biogas plants, farms for growing Indians, pigs, walnut and apple orchards, 2 elevators and a feed mill. The Gals Agro departure of about 40 thousand hectares of land in the Kyiv, Chernihiv, Vinnitsa and Poltava regions. The Gals Agro employs more than 1,500 people.
The direction of alternative energy company began to develop in 2016, and in 2017 Gals Agro attracted a loan in the amount of € 10 million. The loan funds were used for the construction and commissioning of 3 biogas plants with a total capacity of 6 MW in the Chernihiv and Kyiv premises. Biogas plants are used by one company of the holding – Gorodishe-Pustovarovskaya Agrarian Company. Biogas is produced by Gals Agro from transportation of production and sugar production wastes – sugar beet pulp, economic crop silage, cattle and pig manure. The planned annual volume is 23.3 million cubic meters of biogas, from which 51.5 million kWh of electricity can be generated.
The heat received in the production process is used for the needs of the holding and the use of a special microclimate in the fermentation tanks: heating of livestock complexes and development of thermal economy. The substrate fermented in a biogas plant is a fertilizer for growing environmentally friendly products at Gals Agro agricultural enterprises. The total cost of the project is about 17 million Euros.

Task

According to the development strategy of the agricultural holding Gals Agro, in 2021 the expansion of two large energy centers is expected: in the village. Linowitsa, increasing the power of its own generator from 2.4 MW to 6.9 MW, in the village. Zhuravka, increasing the capacity of its own generation from 1.2 MW to 3.9 MW.

Outcome

For the expansion of energy centers, the customer chose INNIO JENBACHER equipment. To implement the project, 4 Jenbacher JMC 420 gas engines with a capacity of 1.5 MW each and 1 Jenbacher JMC 416 gas engine with a capacity of 1.2 MW were purchased.

Specialists from KTS Engineering proposed a container-type solution*, using a version of Jenbacher engines designed for the specifics of biogas.

* A Jenbacher container is a complete power plant that can be installed at any location, with quick start-up and ramp-up.

Solution features

  1. Special version of Jenbacher engines. To achieve high reliability and efficiency, Jenbacher was created taking into account the characteristics of the use of the type of fuel.
  2. Reliability of Jenbacher equipment. The main criteria for choosing JENBACHER equipment for the customer were the availability of highly qualified after-sales service, represented by KTS Engineering, as well as real experience in operating the equipment, which confirmed the high reliability of the equipment and high technical and economic indicators.
